Trex vs. TimberTech: Which Decking Brand Is Right for You?

Trex and TimberTech are the two decking brands Louisville homeowners ask us about most. A&S Construction installs both, and both make excellent low-maintenance decks. The biggest difference isn't quality. It's what the boards are made of.
Who Makes Them
Trex has been making composite decking since 1996 and pioneered the category. It is the world's largest manufacturer of wood-alternative decking.
TimberTech is made by AZEK, which became part of James Hardie, the maker of Hardie siding, in 2025. TimberTech has been a major name in low-maintenance decking for decades.
The Big Difference: Composite vs. PVC
Every Trex decking collection is a composite: recycled wood fibers and recycled plastic, protected by a durable outer shell.
TimberTech offers two kinds of boards:
- TimberTech Composite (Legacy, Reserve, Terrain, and the Prime collections): capped composite boards, similar in concept to Trex.
- TimberTech Advanced PVC (Vintage, Landmark, and Harvest): boards made without wood content. PVC is lighter and highly resistant to moisture, which makes it popular around pools and in full-sun locations.
Warranties
| Brand/Line | Limited Residential Warranty |
|---|---|
| Trex Enhance | 25 years |
| Trex Select | 35 years |
| Trex Transcend, Transcend Lineage, Signature | 50 years |
| TimberTech Composite (Prime collections) | 25 years |
| TimberTech Composite (Legacy, Reserve, Terrain) | 30 years |
| TimberTech Advanced PVC | Limited lifetime product; 50-year fade and stain |
With Trex, there's one more layer of protection when you work with A&S. As a TrexPro Platinum contractor, we register eligible Trex projects for the TrexPro Limited Labor Warranty, which covers labor to replace defective products for up to 12 years depending on the Trex line and products installed. Extended labor coverage through A&S is available on Trex projects only; TimberTech decks are covered by TimberTech's own product warranties.
Heat
All decking gets warm in direct sun, especially darker colors. Trex Transcend Lineage features heat-mitigating technology, and TimberTech says its Advanced PVC boards are cooler to the touch than many composite boards. For full-sun decks, lighter colors help with either brand.
Cost
Trex offers the broadest price range, from the budget-friendly Enhance line up to the luxury Signature line. TimberTech's composite collections compete across a similar range, and its Advanced PVC collections sit at the premium end. At A&S, TimberTech's entry PVC collection is priced in the same tier as Trex Transcend.
Which Should You Choose?
Choose Trex if you want the brand that pioneered composite decking, a good-better-best lineup that fits almost any budget, heat-mitigating options, and extended labor coverage through a TrexPro Platinum contractor.
Choose TimberTech Advanced PVC if you want a board with no wood content, a lighter board, or a deck around a pool, or you want the longest product warranty.
Either way, you'll get a deck that never needs staining. We'll bring samples of both so you can compare them against your home.
In our experience, Trex is the best fit for most Louisville decks, which is why A&S Construction has invested in earning TrexPro Platinum status.
