Trex vs. Deckorators: Comparing Two Top Composite Decking Brands
A&S Construction installs both Trex and Deckorators, so we're often asked which is better. Both are excellent, low-maintenance products. The differences come down to what's inside the board, warranty structure, and the look you want.
What the Boards Are Made Of
Trex has been making composite decking since 1996 and pioneered the category. Today it is the world's largest manufacturer of wood-alternative decking, with five collections that range from entry-level to luxury. Trex boards are made from recycled wood fibers and recycled plastic film, wrapped in a durable protective shell.
Deckorators offers traditional wood-plastic composite lines as well as its premium Surestone mineral-based composite technology, used in lines like Voyage and Summit. Surestone boards are lightweight and have very little thermal expansion and contraction, and Voyage is warranted for ground and water contact.
Warranties
- Trex: 25-year limited residential warranty on Enhance, 35 years on Select, and 50 years on Transcend, Transcend Lineage, and Signature, including fade and stain coverage.
- Trex labor coverage through A&S: As a TrexPro Platinum contractor, A&S registers eligible Trex projects for the TrexPro Limited Labor Warranty, which covers labor to replace defective products for up to 12 years depending on the Trex line and products installed.
- Deckorators Voyage: 50-year structural, 25-year stain and fade, and 25-year removal and replacement limited warranties.
- Other Deckorators lines: generally 25-year structural and stain and fade coverage.
Look and Feel
Trex offers a broad color palette, from classic browns to modern greys, with multi-tonal streaking in its premium lines. Trex Transcend Lineage includes heat-mitigating technology that helps boards stay cooler in the sun. Deckorators Voyage has a micro-embossed, slip-resistant surface designed to stay more comfortable in the sun. Both brands offer a wide range of colors, so seeing samples side by side is the best way to choose.
Cost
At comparable tiers, the two brands are priced similarly. At A&S, Deckorators Voyage falls in the same price tier as Trex Transcend.
Which Should You Choose?
Choose Trex if you want a well-known brand, a clear good-better-best lineup, heat-mitigating options, and Trex's extended labor warranty through a TrexPro Platinum contractor.
Choose Deckorators Voyage if you want a mineral-based board with minimal expansion, or your deck is close to the ground or near water.
Either way, you'll get a durable deck that never needs staining.
Bring samples of both home and see them against your siding and trim. We're happy to help you compare.
